Disk Scheduling for Multimedia Database Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
A special aspect of multimedia database applications is that they require continuity in their data access. The maximum number of users who can simultaneously use the multimedia database is limited by this continuity requirement. Formulas for computing the maximum number of users and the associated memory requirement have been presented in the literature. However, these formulas do not take into account the disk scheduling algorithm used by the multimedia server. In this paper, we analyze the eeect of this factor and show that practical disk scheduling algorithms drastically reduce the amount of memory required to support the continuity constraint. A simulation-based study is used to connrm these eeects and to highlight the performance characteristics for various types of media.

Design and Analysis of a Real-Time Storage Server for Multimedia Applications using Disk Arrays
This paper designs a real-time storage server (RTSS) for remote multimedia playback applications. The design goal is to maximize the number of clients which can be serviced simultaneously. RTSS must, however, maintain the continuity of each medium. To satisfy both the design goal and the constraint, we propose a new scheduling scheme called round scheduling to eeectively retrieve multimedia dis...

The advance of high bandwidth communication technologies has created opportunites for various multimedia applications, such as video-on-demand (VOD). We consider in this chapter four types of scheduling which are required for VOD systems: viewer scheduling, stream scheduling, disk copy scheduling and disk arm scheduling. Viewer scheduling focuses on how to maximize the sharing of video streams ...
متن کاملA Tight Upper Bound of the Lumped Disk Seek Time for the Scan Disk Scheduling Policy
A tight upper bound of the lumped disk seek time for the Scan disk scheduling policy is presented. The tight upper bound is based on an accurate disk seek time model. One of the most important applications of the tight upper bound is in multimedia storage system design. Without a tight upper bound based on an accurate disk seek time model, the designers of multimedia storage systems would be fo...
متن کاملReal-Time Scheduling for Multimedia Services
High-speed networks and high-performance workstations are necessary but not sufficient to support distributed multimedia applications. A real-time scheduling system designed for multimedia data types is also required to orchestrate communications channels, disk storage units, output devices, and the CPU. These subsystems are coordinated to accommodate the special requirements of multimedia data...

This service allows the delivery of movies (or games, sports, news, etc.) to homes on viewers' requests. Video servers are different from traditional file servers or database systems in the following major aspects: they have large storage capacity, must support inten...
